How a person communicates (or doesn’t) can tell us everything we need to know about them: are they confident or are they shy? Are they an over-sharer or are they hiding something?

Dialogue is an invaluable asset we have as authors of prose in our toolbelt to showcase characters and move the plot forward, but often it’s overlooked for other elements of prose. In this lecture, we will put dialogue at the forefront by examining passages from plays, movies, and children’s novels to see exactly what works and how to use it in our own writing.

What can dialogue show us about a character? How can we effectively use silence, pauses, and dialogue tags to convey meaning?

We will look to the experts of dialogue to understand just how crucial it is in telling any type of story.
