Call for Submissions: When It’s Too Hard to Say Out Loud: Students on Centers of Writing

My name is Loren Kleinman and my co-editor on this project is Dr. Max Orsini. We are authors, teachers, and believers in the powerful capacity with which writing can change people’s lives. 

Max and I are co-editing a collection of student-authored essays called When It’s Too Hard to Say Out Loud: Students on Centers of Writing. We feature the works of tutors and tutees who have discovered both rhetorical and human identity within global writing centers. Focusing on themes such as the agency gained from giving and receiving writing assistance, the identity formed from the discovery of one’s writerly voice, and the communities built within and beyond writing centers, our text positions students own academic, creative, social, and personal experiences at the forefront of the writing center and tutoring conversations.

It is our hope—and our contributors’ collective hopes—that their stories said out loud will inform and perhaps reframe writing conversations shared by writing center staffs, university administrators, college first-year experience committees, and writing across the curriculum cohorts and any other groups seeking to improve or enhance curricular and community life on campus.  

We have a section in the book that focuses on building community in and out of the writing center and are interested in submitting pieces that focus on access challenges in writing support and how writing support professionals are building communities, one writer, at a time. The deadline would be August 1 to submit an essay of 1200-2000 words
