Minority Memoir Writing Group: Sunday, August 4th & every first Sunday @ 11AM

The Minority Memoir Writing Group (MMWG) is a once-monthly writing group sponsored by The Loft Literary Center. The objective is to bring our memoir or personal essay writing, share with the group and give each other feedback. The hope is to create a space safe from the Othering effect that happens when one shares their work with an audience of the majority. All skill levels are welcomed - the only requirement is that you be a person of color in order to participate. I hope that we can come together and grow as writers and as people.

I started this group because I couldn't find any places where my voice was free to be its natural self - without fear of being misunderstood or having my lived experience questioned. After all, memoir is all about our personal experiences, our subjective truths. It's hard to get to the heart of the matter when you're second-guessing the validity of what you wrote - especially when your writing is based on things you've seen and felt.

I hope you can come to our next meeting, this Sunday, August 4th from 11AM to 1PM in the Book Club Room of The Loft Literary Center. It's on the 3rd floor, take a left when you exit the elevator. We meet every first Sunday of the Month, same time, same place. If you can't make this one, come on by Sunday, September 1st.

By the way, my name is Said Farah (but I go by Shaiye) and you can read some of my work at www.SaidShaiye.com. If you hadn't guessed, I love to write and it would be really cool to meet some like-minded people.
