Needs

In the United States, it is almost impossible to make a living as a writer. This is because our country has divested from the arts in favor of industry. Capitalism demands commodification above all else, and this corruption has stifled American literature for far too long.

The Loft’s inaugural Wordplay festival is almost here! Through the Loft’s spring theme of Needs, we’ve been thinking about and discussing all the ways in which we need stories in order to live, as well as the things stories need to live.

“What do you mean, rules? In my space opera about wizards and flying lions?”
Yes, rules. Even in the most fantastical of adventures, you still need rules.

Through the Loft’s theme of Needs, we’ve been exploring different facets of stories and why we need them. The argument that everyone needs books seems fairly obvious. But it’s also important to remember that everyone’s reading needs are different.

What’s more believable: being struck by lightning, or being bitten by a vampire?

There’s something to be said for a space to share stories that can’t find a home anywhere else.

Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back.

It’s funny how often the second part of that cliché is dropped from the narrative.

As the new year continues, it seems only fitting to transition from “Fairy Tales” to our new theme of “Needs.”
